azimuth (n)


An arc of the horizon measured from True North through 360 degrees to determine the direction of a star or other celestial body. Technically, the point where a vertical plane passing through the star and the earth`s center meets the horizontal plane as seen from the observer. In use, the navigator uses tables to determine the approximate azimuth of a star for correct identification before taking a sight with a sextant.
